Week 6 Paintovers and demos

Week 6 HW

:D Hey guys! Here's my HW for this week.

brandon week 6

Week 6 John HW submission

Hey Craig,  Alex, Brandon, and Deborah.

I only found time to refine the Golem, and only just started on the trees. I also re-did the Golem pose as I felt one leg looked awkward. I also put a big "Frazetta" moon in, trying to keep it subtle.

Tree are hard to paint.  :-)

week 5 paintovers and demo

week 5 paintovers and demo

moving on..

still in progress

Mini assignment Ralph McQuarrie

I did somewhat a similar ship to the X-Wing Fighter from Star Wars. I ended up making it somewhat my own still needs some work though and I need to fix the boxiness of it. .__.; It's something quick, I do plan on finishing it into something though.

week 5

i didn't quite finish

Dragon Canyon HW

I still want to polish the clouds a bit and bring out the formation in the rocks and such. So I still plan on working on it more.

Week 5 John Hayes Ralph McQuarrie Master Study

I had a lot of fun with this, but sadly not much time. I picked a classic A-wing.

One of the RM cooler designs, including it here for ref.

I started with perspective lines to make a 2 point reference grid. The most difficult shape was the cockpit that I simplified a bit. While I tried to keep proper perspective in mind, I did "eyeball" some details till they looked correct. I suspect the RM source also has some details off perspective, but it still looks correct.
I used the dreaded Photoshop ellipse tool to make a ellipse shape that I re-used over and over.

Cheers

Week 5 John HW progress

Hey Craig,  Alex, Brandon, and Deborah.

I continued to develop the "David vs Goliath" version of the Golem since, to me, the overall composition was reading better. I knew as I continued to develop the image with more detail, the overall legibility of the shadow shapes might be difficult to maintain.

Here is what I have so far, the past two weeks have been crazy busy, but I managed to put some time into the image every day, even if it was only 1/2 hour or so.

I re-did the line art. Ideally cleaner line art might have helped more.

Working out the composition shapes based upon Craig's feedback.

During the painting process I re-did the pose as I was not happy with how the body of the Golem was reading. I think my previous shade art is still better for the pose. I just don't know how to paint trees, looking at various examples of trees lead me to this.

Still needs more work!

Mini assignment!

Since we have an extra week due to the postponement, I'd like you all to make a master copy in Black and white of either a vehicle from Syd Mead or Ralph McQuarrie, or a building from Frank Lloyd Wright or Hugh Ferriss.

We will be including vehicles or architecture in our next assignment, so this will help you get a jump on that!

Dragon Comp

Values and color next.

Week 4 John HW submission

My compositions, one greyscale and another with some color experiments

Just the tones

brandon's assignment

Week 4 Johns flow and theme shape

Red is flow, blue is the triangle theme. Craig, I love this step and it really helps me map out  the various elements in the composition.

I was unable to directly upload this image to Blogger, so made a link from Photobucket.

Week 4 John's sketches and reference

A took some pictures of rough work in my sketchbook. Drawing with ballpoint pen is fun.

I also found reference for various elements.

Learning from last week, I made a quick 3d comp using only basic shapes and pre-made content that is included with Modo.  heh heh.

Week 4 John's composition roughs

Hey Craig,  Alex, Brandon, and Deborah.

I am trying a Golem with Human composition. After several quick composition doodles I have narrowed it down to the following three.
